Greetings.

Welcome to the launch of The South Dakota Standard! Tom Lawrence and I will bring you thoughts and ideas concerning issues pertinent to the health and well-being of our political culture. Feel free to let us know what you are thinking.

Former Sioux Falls mayor Rick Knobe: The highest court in the land hits new lows — it is far from supreme

Former Sioux Falls mayor Rick Knobe: The highest court in the land hits new lows — it is far from supreme

They may be the highest court in the land (justices are shown above in a public domain photo posted on wikimedia commons), but based on numerous recent decisions I can’t refer to them as “Supreme.”

I’m not a lawyer nor a constitutional scholar, so my thoughts are coming from the cheap seats. To me, if a president pressures other elected or government officials to do things “his way” in this case violates the law, it’s a no-brainer — NO IMMUNITY.

Trump’s numerous attempts to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to not certify the 2020 election results and his calls to Georgia, asking officials there to find him votes, are clear election interference violations.

“All I want to do is this: I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won this state, and flipping the state is a great testament to the country,” Trump implored Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican. “I only need 11,000 votes. Fellas, I need 11,000 votes. Give me a break. It’s just not possible to have lost Georgia. It’s not possible.”

His coordination with his minions is clearly a conspiracy.

Trump and his people have bastardized the system. His desire to delay has been honored by too many, including Aileen Cannon, a federal judge in Florida, and six of the poorly named “Supremes” — Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

Justice delayed is justice denied — for all of us. I feel we are destroying ourselves from within.

As Pogo said many years ago, “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”

Rick Knobe is a former mayor of Sioux Falls and a longtime radio talk show host who is now retired but remains active and involved in his community and state. His columns appear regularly on The South Dakota Standard.
